DEMS gives tips to stay safe during floods

As the rainy season intensifies, the DEMS urges residents to remain alert and prepared for possible floods.

The CoE’s DEMS and the South African Weather Service remain on high alert during the rainy season.

These teams constantly monitor weather conditions and respond to flood-related emergencies across the region.

According to the DEMS, building community resilience begins with awareness and preparedness.

“We urge residents to stay informed about weather forecasts and to act before its too late,” said William Ntladi, the DEMS spokesperson.

“Understanding the risks and having a plan can save lives. Your safety, and that of your family, is more important than any property or vehicle. Flooding can cause extensive damage to roads, bridges and cars, often leaving people stranded or trapped.

“Residents should never underestimate the power of moving water, just 30cm of fast-moving water is enough to sweep away a car,” added Ntladi.

To stay safe before, during, and after heavy rainfall, residents should follow these simple but effective safety measures:

Before a flood:

• Regularly monitor weather forecasts and alerts;

• Devise an evacuation plan for your family;

• Prepare an emergency kit with food, water and essentials to last at least three days;

• Store important documents, valuables and clothing on the upper floors or elevated areas;

• Keep emergency numbers handy and share them with your family.

During a flood:

• Stay calm and prioritise the safety of your loved ones;

• If evacuation is necessary, switch off all the main power sources to prevent electrical shock and fire;

• Avoid downed power lines and low-lying areas;

• Do not camp, park, or drive near rivers;

• Never try to walk or drive on flooded roads or over bridges;

• Avoid touching floodwater. It could be contaminated with sewage, oil or have a live electric current passing through it.

After a flood:

• Avoid using floodwater for drinking, cooking and cleaning;

• Discard any food that came into contact with contaminated water;

• If you did evacuate, continue to monitor weather and safety updates before returning home.
