Heidelberg roads crumble after weeks of heavy rain

Weeks of rain have severely damaged Heidelberg’s roads, so authorities urge motorists to slow down, stay alert and avoid flooded roads.

Heidelberg’s road network is in a critical state after weeks of heavy rain and violent storms.

Potholes and collapsing road surfaces have created hazardous conditions for motorists throughout the area.

The rain accelerated the deterioration of several roads, with new potholes appearing daily. In some suburbs, large sections of tar have given way, leaving deep, uneven surfaces.

They are difficult for drivers to detect, especially during wet weather and at night.

A section of tarred road has caved in from the rainfall, leaving a hazardous cavity.

Local authorities and community patrollers warn motorists to reduce speed and exercise heightened caution.

Heavy rain often fills potholes to the brim, disguising their depth and turning them into hidden hazards. This has already resulted in many reports of tyre blowouts and vehicle damage after drivers unknowingly hit water-filled cavities.

One of the most concerning areas is the low-water bridge on Mare Street, where a massive pothole is fully exposed after floodwaters receded.

The damage, previously concealed beneath fast-flowing water, is extensive and poses a severe risk to vehicles.

Despite barrier tape at the site, some motorists were seen driving through the submerged section during the floods, unaware of the cavity beneath the water’s surface.

Authorities stress never to try and drive across roads or bridges covered in water. Hidden beneath the surface could be deep potholes, loosened or displaced tar, debris, rocks, or even collapsed road structures. In such circumstances, a seemingly shallow puddle can quickly become a life-threatening trap.

As storm damages continue to unfold, residents are urged to report dangerous potholes and road defects to the Lesedi Local Municipality call centre on 016 466 1901 or via the My Lesedi app.
