Lesedi Municipality confirms tap water is safe after social media rumours

An anonymous voice note circulating on social media claimed that foreign nationals had poisoned a local water reservoir, warning residents to avoid tap water. Lesedi Local Municipality has confirmed that the claims are false, assuring the community that the water supply is safe, uncontaminated, and regularly monitored.

Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM) has moved to calm residents following an anonymous voice note circulating on social media, which claimed that foreign nationals had allegedly poisoned a local water reservoir and warned people to avoid using tap water.

The municipality refuted the claims, emphasising that the water supply is safe, uncontaminated, and suitable for consumption.

LLM spokesperson Kahleho Seaga said: “We want to assure our residents that these rumours are completely false.

We urge the community not to react to or share unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic.

“This situation highlights the importance of verifying information before sharing it. We thank the community for its trust and cooperation as we continue to ensure safe and reliable water services,” he said.

Seaga added that the health and safety of its residents and local businesses remained a top priority.

The municipality conducts regular, rigorous monitoring of water quality and has confirmed that all water systems are functioning normally and are free from contamination.

Seaga encouraged residents to continue using tap water as usual and to rely only on official communications from the municipality for information regarding water safety.
