Hospital staff showcased their commitment to health and fitness by participating in the Joburg North Marathon.
Heidelberg Hospital staff participated in the Joburg North Marathon, a qualifying race for the 2026 Comrades and Two Oceans ultra marathons, on February 1.
Themed Community, Preparation, and Purpose, the event attracted runners from across SA and offered various categories, including the 42.2km marathon, 21.1km half-marathon, a 10km race, and a 5km fun run.
Nkanyiso Sithole, Mapula Makgoba, Khethelo Zuma, Lufunho Makhavuli, and Amanda Mabunda represented the hospital. All the participants completed their races and received medals.

Zuma, who competed in the 10km, described the marathon as well-organised and rewarding, noting that the route tested physical strength and mental focus.
“The route was scenic but challenging enough to push you beyond your comfort zone. What stood out for me was the motivation from fellow runners and supporters along the way. “Participating in races like this has helped improve my stamina and endurance, and positively impacted my overall health and well-being,” he said.

Makhavuli said the marathon lived up to its theme and was more than just a running experience.
“This marathon reflected the theme. There was a strong sense of support among the runners, which shows how sports can unite people. It also reminded me of the importance of discipline and consistent training, not only for race day but for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and setting long-term fitness goals,” she said.
