Nigel and Heidelberg residents urged to stay vigilant this summer as temperatures bring reptiles out of hiding
The rising temperatures are forcing snakes into backyards and homes in Nigel and Heidelberg. Local snake catcher Levi Willard shares his experience and safety tips after a snake was recently found in Alra Park.
Residents in Nigel and Heidelberg are urged to remain alert as rising temperatures increase the likelihood of snakes entering residential areas in search of water and shelter.
Local snake catcher Levi Willard (22) from Alra Park said the warmer conditions have resulted in more call-outs, including an incident on February 5, when a concerned resident approached him for help after spotting a snake.
“I was at home when a gentleman came running to my house and told me there was a snake in his yard. When someone comes to you like that, you know they are scared, so you have to act quickly but calmly. The snake was well hidden, which is common, especially in yards that have bricks, rubble or long grass. It turned out to be a common brown house snake and, fortunately, it was safely removed without anyone getting hurt,” he said.

Willard said his experience with snakes began at an early age, having started catching them when he was just nine years old under the guidance of his father.
“My father was a snake catcher before me, and he taught me how to handle snakes properly. For me, there is no fear, only joy. I stay calm by the grace of God and because I genuinely love animals. When you respect the snake and understand its behaviour, the situation becomes much safer for everyone,” he said.
Willard also warned that residents should take extra precautions when cleaning their yards or cutting long grass, as snakes often use such areas for cover.
“It is very important to keep your yard clean and visible so that you can easily spot movement. People should also wear proper personal protective equipment, such as gloves and boots, especially when working outside during hot weather.

“Most snakes we catch are venomous, except for the mole snake. People should never assume a snake is harmless or try to deal with it themselves. The most common snake species encountered in the Nigel and Heidelberg areas include rinkhals, puff adders, stiletto snakes, night adders and mole snakes.
“If you see a snake, the best thing to do is move away from it and give it space. Do not try to touch or chase it away. If a snake is found inside your house, immediately leave, call a snake catcher and do not go back inside until the snake has been safely removed,” he said.
