Residents alarmed as raw sewage flows into Blesbokspruit
Heidelberg residents are expressing concern after raw sewage was spotted flowing into the Blesbokspruit, threatening the river’s natural beauty, local wildlife, and public health.
Heidelberg residents are expressing alarm after raw sewage was spotted flowing unchecked into the Blesbokspruit, one of the area’s most cherished natural waterways.
Community members say that the sewage not only spoils the spruit’s natural beauty but also poses a serious risk to public health and the local environment.
The Blesbokspruit is well known for its rich biodiversity, including birdlife and other wildlife, and has long been considered a key natural asset for the region.

Local resident Thabo Mokoena said they want the municipality to intervene in this matter.
“It breaks my heart to see this beautiful spruit polluted like this. People come here to enjoy nature, and now raw sewage is running straight into the water. Something must be done immediately,” he said.
Another resident, Lerato Khumalo, added that the authorities need to act fast.
“We have always been proud of Blesbokspruit and seeing it like this is not only sad, but it’s dangerous for children, animals, and the environment. The authorities must take this issue seriously before it’s too late,” she said.
Pieter van der Merwe, a regular walker, also lamented about the unbearable stench.

“I walk past the spruit every morning, and the smell of sewage is unbearable. This is our community’s river, and it should be protected, not contaminated,” he said.
Amanda Leroux raised concerns for local wildlife.
“The animals that depend on this water are also at risk. Birds, fish, and other creatures could die if this continues. We hope the municipality fixes the problem soon,” she said.
Comment is awaited from the Lesedi Local Municipality.
