Community invited to run and hike for a cause at Heidelberg SPCA fundraiser

Residents are invited to take part in a 5km and 7km run or a 5km hiking trail at Tuin Van Eden Farm as Howell Properties hosts the Hike for Heidelberg SPCA, raising funds and collecting donations to support animals in need.

The Heidelberg community is invited to lace up their running shoes and hiking boots for a good cause as Howell Properties, together with local partners, hosts the Hike for Heidelberg SPCA at Tuin Van Eden Farm on March 21.

The event will feature a 5km and a 7km run, as well as a 5km hiking trail, with all proceeds supporting the Heidelberg SPCA and the animals in their care.

Event coordinator Sechelle Diederiks from Howell Properties said the initiative was inspired by the company’s close involvement with the community and a shared passion for animal welfare.

“We work closely with many people in the community, and in our line of work we often become the eyes and ears of what is happening in certain homes. “There have been times when I had to call the SPCA to assist in difficult situations involving animals. Our office at Howell Properties has always had a soft spot for animals, so we wanted to do something meaningful to support the important work they do. Funds raised through ticket sales and business sponsorships will go directly towards helping the SPCA care for animals and improve facilities,” she said.

Diederiks said participants can expect a scenic but challenging route at Tuin Van Eden Farm.

“The route is quite challenging; it starts with a nice climb to the top and then goes downhill. It’s steep enough to feel it in your legs the next day, but still manageable for most people.

“After the downhill section, most of the route continues along a flatter road. We have used the route before and people loved it. Runners will start first and hikers will follow afterwards because the path is narrow and you cannot pass each other on the way down,” she said.

Diederiks also encouraged residents to support the SPCA in other ways.

“We would encourage people to bring along a bag of dog or cat food. Even if you can’t take part in the race, you can still contribute by donating food, blankets or other items for the animals.

“Donations can be dropped off at our office at 59 Pretorius Street in Heidelberg or directly at the Heidelberg SPCA. If anyone would like to make a financial contribution, they are welcome to contact me for the banking details. Community partnerships are extremely important. Without businesses with generous hearts supporting initiatives like this, we would not be able to raise meaningful proceeds for the SPCA. In fact, the biggest contributions come from the donations made by local businesses,” she said.
