Hundreds gather at Hoër Volkskool to honour Rilana Lötter after tragic accident
Family, friends, teachers and fellow learners paid heartfelt tribute to the beloved young Volkie during an emotional memorial service marked by moving speeches, colourful balloons and touching memories.
The hockey field at Hoër Volkskool became a place of remembrance, reflection and farewell on the morning of June 8, as hundreds of mourners gathered to celebrate the life of 13-year-old Rilana Lötter.
Family members, friends, teachers, fellow learners and members of the wider community came together for an emotional memorial service honouring the young Volkie, who lost her life in a motor vehicle accident outside Heidelberg on June 5.

In keeping with the wishes of the family, mourners arrived dressed in bright shades of pink, purple and yellow rather than traditional black.
The colours served as a fitting tribute to a young girl remembered for her vibrant personality and cheerful nature.

As learners sat shoulder to shoulder and loved ones sought comfort in one another, the profound impact Rilana had on those around her became evident through the heartfelt tributes shared throughout the service.
Opening the gathering, teacher Kiewiet Cloete reflected on the deep loss felt by the school community.

“We are gathered here not only to mourn the loss of one of our own but to celebrate a young life that touched so many hearts. Rilana’s kindness, enthusiasm and beautiful spirit will forever remain part of the Volkie family. Although her time with us was far too short, her impact will never be forgotten,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Veruscha Stander described Rilana as a child whose kindness and respect for others left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

“Rilana was a sweet, respectful and caring child who was loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She had a special way of making people feel valued and welcomed. On behalf of the family, I would like to thank the community for the overwhelming support, the emergency services who responded so compassionately, and Hoër Volkskool for standing by us during this incredibly difficult time. The love shown to our family has carried us through our darkest days,” she said.

One of the most poignant moments of the service came when learners and friends released colourful balloons into the sky following a moment of silence and prayer.
As the balloons floated higher, many in attendance were overcome with emotion, symbolising a final farewell to a young life gone far too soon. Rilana’s love for hockey and the positive influence she had on her teammates were also remembered.

Hockey director Manie Last paid tribute to her dedication both on and off the field.

“Rilana was more than just a talented hockey player; she was a teammate, a friend and a source of encouragement to those around her. Her dedication, positive attitude and love for the sport inspired many. The hockey community has lost a bright young star, but her legacy will continue to live on every time we step onto the field,” he said.
