Heidelberg’s Commander Dr Johan Lockem named South Africa’s Chaplain of the Year

Heidelberg resident Cmdr. Dr. Johan Lockem has been honoured with three national awards, including Chaplain of the Year, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to spiritual care, hospice ministry and serving communities with compassion.

A Heidelberg chaplain has been recognised nationally for his outstanding commitment to spiritual care and community service after receiving three prestigious honours at the Professional Chaplaincy South Africa Awards recently held in Pretoria.

Commander Dr Johan Lockem (76), who serves as chaplain at the Suikerbosoord Heidelberg Vereniging vir Bejaardes, was named Chaplain of the Year. He was also promoted to the rank of three-star chaplain and received the Hospice Chaplain of the Year award in recognition of his years of dedicated service.

The awards honour chaplains who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, compassion and commitment to providing spiritual and emotional support to individuals, families and communities.

Lockem said receiving the honours was both humbling and deeply meaningful.

“Receiving this honour is both a humbling and deeply meaningful experience. I accept it with sincere gratitude, recognising that it is not merely a personal achievement, but a reflection of God’s grace, the trust of those I have been privileged to serve, and the unwavering support of my family, fellow chaplains, church and community.

“My thoughts immediately turned to the many individuals and families I have had the privilege of walking alongside during times of crisis, grief, illness and hope.

“Every act of compassion, every listening ear, every word of encouragement and every prayer can make a lasting difference in someone’s life. I receive this honour with humility, giving all glory and honour to God, who called me into this ministry of service,” he said.

Lockem described chaplaincy as a lifelong calling inspired by Christ’s example of compassion and servant leadership.

“My journey as a chaplain has been shaped by a lifelong desire to serve God by serving people. Ministry extends far beyond the walls of a church.

“It is about being present with people during life’s most difficult and meaningful moments. Serving as a chaplain is not simply something I do; it is a calling that continues to shape my life every day.

“Being able to comfort a grieving family, support emergency personnel after traumatic incidents or simply be a calm and caring presence during difficult times is a privilege that cannot be measured. Although we cannot always change circumstances, we can ensure that no one has to face them alone,” he said.

Lockem also paid tribute to fellow Chaplaincy SA members serving the Heidelberg area, including Chaplain Heidi Pereira, Chaplain Salome Moloi Mofokeng and newly ordained Jameson Park chaplain Maria Mofokeng Mandonsela.

“We remain committed to serving our communities with compassion, respect, professionalism and Christian love, ensuring that people have access to spiritual and emotional support whenever they need it.
“My prayer is that, through our combined efforts, we will continue bringing hope, comfort, peace and encouragement to individuals and families throughout Heidelberg and the surrounding communities.

“There is a great need for compassionate men and women who are willing to make a positive difference in the lives of people during times of crisis, illness, loss and trauma. If you have a heart for people and a willingness to serve, we would be delighted to welcome you into this ministry,” he said.
