Teamwork saves 2 barn owls after they become trapped in Ratanda chimney
SPCA volunteers and members of the Ratanda community went above and beyond to rescue two barn owls in a challenging operation.
SPCA volunteers recently found themselves involved in an unusual wildlife rescue after being called to assist two barn owls trapped in a chimney in Ratanda.
Although the volunteers were not specifically equipped or experienced in owl rescues, they worked with the resources available to ensure both birds were safely freed.
The first owl was trapped at the top of the chimney and had to be rescued from a height. The second was trapped inside the chimney, requiring a more challenging rescue operation.

With the property owner’s permission and assistance, a hole was carefully made in the chimney to reach the trapped bird.
The rescue effort also highlighted the strong community spirit in Ratanda, with several residents stepping in to assist the SPCA volunteers in breaking through the chimney and safely removing the owl.
SPCA chairperson Petro Coetsee praised the community for its involvement and the volunteers for going the extra mile to save the birds.

“This rescue was a wonderful example of what can be achieved when an organisation and the community work together.
“Even though rescuing owls is not something our volunteers encounter every day, they were determined to do everything possible to save these two birds. We are incredibly grateful to the Mofokeng family and everyone in the Ratanda community who assisted.
“Their compassion and willingness to help made a real difference, and we are thankful that both barn owls were allowed to receive the specialised care they needed,” she said.

Following the rescue, both barn owls were transported to Boksburg SPCA, a sister society, which subsequently handed them over to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital for specialised veterinary care.
