Local elections prompt SASSA review of November grant payments

The November 4 election date clashes with the scheduled disability grant payment, with revised dates still to be announced after consultations.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is reviewing its November social grant payment schedule following the announcement of local government elections on November 4.

In a media statement, SASSA said it had announced payment dates for the 2026/27 financial year in March, following approval by the National Treasury.

According to that schedule, the older person’s grant was set to be paid on November 3, the disability grant on November 4, children’s grants on November 5, and November 6 was reserved for beneficiaries whose grants are under review.

The schedule has since clashed with the election date.

Election date creates clash

In May, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that local government elections will be held on November 4, which is the same day disability grants were due to be paid.

Against this background, SASSA said the November payment cycle is being reviewed in light of the upcoming elections.

Announcement expected soon

“SASSA, after consultation with the relevant stakeholders, will announce the new arrangement in due course,” said spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to paying the right social grant to the right person at the right time and place.
