Nigel Rugby Club defends Merlin Cup title with 26-25 win over East Rand United

The clash, filled with tension, yellow cards, and a decisive last-minute penalty, kept supporters on edge until the final whistle.

Nigel‘s first and second rugby teams took to the field in the finals of the Valke Merlin Cup on September 6.

The first team edged out East Rand United in a nail-biting 26-25 victory, while the second team faced off against Elsburg.

Red and yellow cards were dealt out easily throughout the match. Five cards were handed out during the match – one red and four yellow.

The first team struggled to gain momentum, as every time they tried to attack, they were either let down by handling errors or ERU did not allow them to build rhythm. ERU was up to the challenge, and the final result was on the line until the bitter end.

ERU was the first to score. They crossed the try line in the third minute, and the team successfully converted it. Their second converted try came at the 30-minute mark.

Nigel scored two minutes later with a converted try and a penalty. The halftime score was Nigel 10 – ERU 14.

As the second half started, Nigel had to play the match with one man less because one of their players received a red card.

Nigel was the first scoring a try. The conversion was unsuccessful. Thereafter, the lead changed hands a few times.

ERU converted a penalty to take back the lead, 17-15. Nigel was next to respond with a penalty to lead 18-17.

Nigel‘s lead did not stay too long as ERU scored a try that was not converted making it 22-18 on the scoreboard. Nigel responded with an unconverted try to lead again, 23-22.

Thereafter, ERU scored a penalty to lead 25-23. As time was running out, Nigel was awarded a penalty that they converted to take the win 26-25.

Freedom Ngubeni is diving over for a try.

Both teams scored three tries. The remaining points came from penalties and conversions.

Nigel’s second team tried hard, but Elsburg was ready for everything Nigel could throw at them.

Elsburg won 14-12 to be crowned second-team Merlin winners.

Elsburg led 7-0 at halftime, with the opening try scored just before halftime.
