Heidelberg Rugby Club Berge secure strong wins over Wasps Senior Rugby Club

Both teams from the Heidelberg Rugby Club impressed on March 14 with convincing victories over Wasps Senior Rugby Club at Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg, with the first team leading 38–14 before lightning forced an early end to the match.

The Heidelberg Rugby Club delivered an impressive performance on March 14, as both their first and second teams recorded victories against the visiting Wasps Senior Rugby Club at Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg.

The Berge first team showed clear improvement from the previous week’s performance.

The home side controlled the match and built a comfortable lead before the game was brought to an early end due to lightning in the area.

At the time the match was stopped, the Berge were leading 38–14, which stood as the final score.

Captain Francois Vorster played a key role in guiding the team from the fly-half position, delivering a composed performance and successfully converting four tries.

His partnership with inside centre Jason Koen added creativity and pace to the backline, which looked dangerous whenever they attacked.

The back three of Jannie Hough, Henry van Biljon and Tiaan Holloway consistently threatened the opposition defence, creating several scoring opportunities during the match.

Van Biljon and Hough each crossed the try line twice, while Frikkie Jansen and Nantus Mouton also added their names to the score sheet.

Up front, the forward pack worked hard to maintain momentum for the home side, with strong contributions from Morne Vermeulen and Jeandre Goosen alongside Mouton.

Earlier in the day, the Berge second team also secured a convincing 20–5 victory against their Wasps counterparts.

Although the match was scrappy at times, the home team showed significant improvement compared to their previous outing.

Notable performances in the second team came from fullback Mpho Mbata, experienced hooker James Atterbury, lock JJ Theron and wing Alvin Jansen, who all made valuable contributions to the team’s victory.

The Berge will return to action this coming Saturday (March 21) when they host the Union Knights in their final preparatory matches before the competitive season begins.
