Benoni Cambridge United launches promotion push after Cambridge and Benoni City merger

The newly formed Benoni Cambridge United is targeting promotion to the ABC Motsepe League after Cambridge FC and Benoni City FC joined forces. The team has made a winning start to its league campaign, coming from two goals down to beat Legends FC 3-2.

A new chapter in Ekurhuleni football has begun after Cambridge Football Club and Benoni City Football Club merged to form Benoni Cambridge United, with the new team targeting promotion to the ABC Motsepe League.

The merger follows months of discussions between the two clubs, which have joined forces in a bid to build a competitive side capable of progressing through the South African football league system while creating opportunities for local players.

The partnership brings together two clubs that had contrasting finishes in the 2025/26 season. Benoni City United topped the league standings but missed out on promotion in the play-offs, while Cambridge United finished sixth.

The newly formed club aims to harness the strengths of both teams to develop talent from across Ekurhuleni and build a side capable of competing for promotion during the 2026/27 season.

Benoni Cambridge United will train at Woodlands International College, with Jim Fouché Stadium in Nigel as its home ground.

The club has also called on local supporters to rally behind the team as it embarks on its promotion campaign. BCU’s Nedbank Cup journey ended following a 3-1 defeat to Highlands Park FC at Mackenzieville Stadium.

The team has since turned its attention to its league fixtures.

The new outfit has already shown fighting spirit in the league, coming from two goals down to defeat Tembisa-based Legends FC 3-2 in its opening match and claim all three points.

The comeback victory gave the newly merged side a positive start as it begins building momentum in its pursuit of promotion.

BCU’s next assignment is an away fixture against Kwa-Thema-based Jealous Down FC in Tsakani, where the team will look to continue its league campaign on a positive note.
