The SAPS Vehicle Crime Investigation and the SAPS Vehicle Safeguarding Section will never demand money or payment for the return of a vehicle which was reported stolen.
There have been a number of incidences that came to the attention of Ermelo Vehicle Crime Investigation.
Secunda area is where it most often occurs but incidents have been reported at Ermelo as well.
The scenario is always as follows:
A person “X” reports his vehicle as stolen at the SAPS.
A few days later “X” receives a call by someone pretending to be from a Vehicle Theft Unit from some distant place.
The complainant is the sweet talked by the phoney policeman into believing that his vehicle was recovered and can possibly sustain damage at the police pound and that they want to return the vehicle to the complainant.
The catch being that they need money for petrol because their Police Breakdown truck is broken, they also stress the fact that they are doing “X” favour for
This money transfers is usually arranged to the E-Wallet system at certain chain stores.
The transfer can therefore not be traced to a specific person and the Cell phone numbers that the use are prepaid numbers that are not registered on RICA.
We want to reiterate that the SAPS will not demand money or payment.
If a vehicle is recovered by the SAP the VCIU or Safeguarding Section will contact the complainant for an Official Identification and disposal to the complainant or relevant Insurance Company.
