Mother strangles 21-month-old baby boy and dumps him in pit toilet in Mayflower

The incident was discovered after the maternal grandmother asked about the whereabouts of the baby to which the accused replied by saying the baby had been taken by a Glenmore social worker

A woman was arrested for murdering her 21-month-old baby boy and throwing him in a pit toilet in the Glenmore section in Mayflower on 27 July .

According to Mayflower Police, the 25-year-old woman is alleged to have strangled her baby and threw him in a neighbour’s toilet during the latter parts of the month of June.

Police spokesman, Const Tryphina Utla, said the incident was discovered after the maternal grandmother asked about the whereabouts of the baby to which the accused replied by saying the baby had been taken by a Glenmore social worker.

“The grandmother did not understand how the baby was taken without her consultation and went to the Department of Social Services with the suspect to inquire about the baby,” Const Utla said.

Const Utla added that the grandmother became suspicious when the suspect was also questioned about the whereabouts of the baby by the social workers.

“The suspect then changed her story saying the police took her baby but could not identify the police official.”

When social workers attempted to call the police, the accused changed her story again saying the baby was taken by a woman in Dundonald.

Const Ulta said police were called in regarding the disappearance of the child and this is when the suspect confessed to killing her baby and throwing him in the neighbour’s pit toilet.

The suspect also pointed out where the toilet was and the body of the child was retrieved.

The grandmother confirmed it was her grandchild.

The suspect appeared in the Mayflower Periodical Court and was released on R500 bail.

Her next court appearance will be on 29 October and police are investigating a case of murder.
