Three arrested after Mayflower service delivery protest turns violent
According to Mayflower Police, the suspects, aged between 36 and 61 years old, are charged with public violence after participating in the unlawful protest which became tense when they closed down the road with big rocks and burning tyres.
Three people were arrested after a protest turned violent in Dundonald, Mayflower at the intersection of Brook Street and Waverly Road on Thursday, 20 September.
The protest comes as residents are complaining about the lack of service delivery from the municipality, which includes poor roads and shortages of water in the area.
Another burning issue was the lack of progress in Dundonald.
According to Mayflower Police, the suspects, aged between 36 and 61 years old, are charged with public violence after participating in the unlawful protest which became tense when they closed down the road with big rocks and burning tyres.
The protesters also disrupted the traffic on a national road.
“The two suspects appeared in the Elukwatini Magistrate’s Court on the same day and were released on bail of R500 each,” the spokesman for Mayflower Police, Const Tryphina Utla, said.
She further said that the other suspects appeared in the Mayflower Periodical Court on Wednesday, 26 September and were also remanded on bail of R500.
The case was postponed to 24 October for further investigation and the Mayflower Police are still looking for a fourth suspect.
