Breyten Police foil attempted robbery on R36 road

When the suspects noticed that they were being followed by the Breyten Police, they stopped the truck on the R36 road, between Ermelo and Breyten, and fled on foot.

Breyten Police are investigating a truck hijacking after a truck was hijacked by three armed men at the KwaZanele location on Thursday, 7 February.

According to police spokesman, Sgt Thabo Mashegoane, the truck driver and his two crewmen were approached by the armed men around 2.20pm and ordered at gunpoint to get in the back of the truck.

“The robbers locked the men in the back and drove off with the truck, however, a community member, who had witnessed what had happened, contacted the police, who swiftly responded,” Sgt Mashegoane said.

Sgt Mashegoane added that when the suspects noticed that they were being followed by the police, they stopped the truck on the R36 road, between Ermelo and Breyten, and fled on foot.

“They fired one shot at the police to which the police retaliated, but no arrests were made and no one was injured during the gunfire.”

The police rescued the driver and his crewmen at the back of the truck, unharmed.

The Local Criminal Record Centre (forensics), arrived and combed the scene.

A drop-in safe attached to the truck was damaged but no money was taken. Only the cell phone of the driver was taken.

Police appeal to anyone with information that can help with the case to contact the investigating officer, Const Lucky Thusi, at 082 660 0809.
