Maritza swims to victory

Fulton School for the Deaf's SPAR Star of the Month.

MARITZA Snyders is Fulton School for the Deaf’s SPAR Star of the Month.

The 17-year-old matric pupil and prefect competed in the Midmar Mile for the first time this year.

She has been swimming for the last four years and trains every day for an hour and added a little bit of training time in so that she would be ready to tackle the world renowned race.

“I was excited but also a little scared to take part,” said Maritza. “When I crossed the finish line I was tired but I was so happy that I finished it.”

She was very proud of herself for competing and was extremely grateful for her friends and family who cheered her on as she crossed the finish line. She completed the swim in 29 minutes and six seconds.

“I would just like to thank my parents for always supporting me,” said Maritza.

Maritza may have been the only pupil from Fulton School for the Deaf to take part in the lengthy swim, but her computer teacher, Natalie Blignault, also took part.

“She has become somewhat of a role model at the school and hopefully the other pupils will be inspired to take part in next year’s event,” said Natalie.
