Waterfall College

Waterfall College is proud to celebrate its SPAR Superstar Declan Hewison who recently earned his KZN colours for fishing. Declan competes in the Natal Deep Sea Angling Under 13 category.

Declan’s love for fishing began when he was just four years old, spending time on the water with his dad. What started as a special father-and-son activity has grown into an impressive skill and a true passion.

For Declan, fishing is about more than the catch. He loves the peace of being on the water and of course, the excitement of being out on the boat.

“We are incredibly proud of Declan’s achievement and the dedication he has shown. He is not only excelling in his sport, but also continues to be a true gentleman at school. Well done, Declan!” said the school.

Michaela Clegg

Hillcrest High School

Michaela makes great strides on the court and in the classroom

Hillcrest High School Grade 11 learner, Michaela Clegg, is a star to watch on the indoor and outdoor netball courts. Michaela spends most afternoons on a netball court while still maintaining her schoolwork – something that is an extra challenge for her as a learner with dyslexia.

In the past eight months or so, her netball skills have been put to the test, both in outdoor and in the Indoor Netball arena, and Michaela has shone brightly! In 2025 she was selected to represent the province as part of the KZN U17 Indoor Netball squad, also receiving a call up to try out for the U19 team. She made the tough call to put her commitment to the Hillcrest High School 1st team, a team she has played for since Grade 9, first and stepped down from the U17 team.

She was, however, able to represent the U19A KZN Indoor Netball squad at the Interprovincial Netball Tournament, with her team placing 2nd in the 6s Tournament, and 3rd in the 7s tournament. She received Silver and Bronze medals for these and an opportunity to try out for the U19 South Africa Squad which will be playing in the Netball World Cup later this year. She made it through to the final round – a fantastic achievement for a player for someone playing against much older players.

Following the U19 IPT, which took place in Gauteng, Michaela participated in an U19 Netball Festival at Waterkloof in Pretoria, playing for the Amanzimtoti Netball Club. She then headed to Benoni to play for the Hillcrest High School 1st Team in the St Dunstan’s Easter Sports Festival, before being called up to play for the Ladies BKZN Indoor Squad at the IPT at the end of April, winning Silver in the 6s tournament and Gold in the 7s tournament.

Michaela has also been selected to play for the U17 PADSSA Schools Outdoor Netball team and the U17 KZN Schools Outdoor Netball squads this year.

Westville Girls’ High School’s Mpiloenhle Ndlovu came first in Dramatic Interpretation at the Clifton Public Speaking Competition recently.

The competition hosted by Clifton Independent School is a festival that takes place annually. There were four categories: prepared speaking, unprepared speaking, and interpretive reading and dramatic interpretation.

Mpiloenhle, who has been chosen as the SPAR Star of the Month, said she was honoured to compete with many great speakers at the festival from different schools.
“I achieved first place in the dramatic interpretation category, which was a new category added to the competition this year. For my performance, I read an abstract from the play The Crucible.”

The Grade 10 learner said she chose The Crucible because it is a powerful and emotional play that allowed her to express strong emotions.

“It took me out of my shell and allowed me to do something I truly love, which is drama. It was a stressful and nerve-racking because this was my first competition but it was fun and I got to do it with my friend. I’ve definitely learned a lot from the experience and the brilliant speakers who’ve done this most of their high school life,” she said
