Get wrapped up in worthy cause
Time is running out to donate blankets to the Little Fighters Cancer Trust's Get Wrapped blanket collection project.
HIGHWAY residents are reminded to donate soft warm blankets before the end of March in support of the Little Fighters Cancer Trust drive.
The Trust is collecting single-bed sized new fleece blankets which will be distributed to children fighting cancer.
So far, 141 blankets have been donated to the cause but during recent visits to paediatric oncology hospitals across the country it was noted that decent bedding was sadly lacking and more blankets are needed.
Mandie Erasmus, the project manager said new blankets were needed because children with cancer have a very low immune system due to their treatment.
“Second hand goods, even if washed, pose an infection threat, which is why we don’t distribute second-hand blankets,” she said.
She also said the softer the blankets, the better it would be for the littlies as many of them have sensitive skin and soft blankets were a better option.”
The Durban hospitals that will benefit from the project are Parklands and Albert Luthuli.
To support the Get Wrapped project in Durban, contact Debbie Riggien on debbier@mtn.blackberry.com to find out where the drop-off points for donations are located. The Highway Mail office and its sister Caxton Community Newspaper offices are also convenient drop off points.
