The man who hanged a little boy from a tree 'for revenge' has been sentenced.

The man responsible for the murder of a five-year-old boy was sentenced to life in prison by the Durban Regional Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty.

Ayanda Mbatha, who hanged his former girlfriend’s son, Siyabonga Gcabashe, from a tree, was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and 15 years for kidnapping.

He was arrested on Friday after police tracked his cellphone to a relative’s house in Pietermaritzburg.

Gcabashe’s lifeless body was found hanging from a tree in Mariannhill on Tuesday 28 January by hunters who use a foot path through the thick forest.

Mbatha claimed he killed the boy as an act of revenge after his mother had broken off their relationship.

Magistrate Anand Maharaj described Mbatha asĀ  as cold and psychotic.
