New cameras to keep an eye on crime

Cameras installed at the corner of Merrifield Road and Winston Churchill Drive, Pinetown, has provided the PRNW with a new lease on crime fighting.

THE crime fighting and prevention efforts of the Pine-Ridge Neighbourhood Watch (PRNW) recently received some support, as Eye Cam, a local digital surveillance solutions company installed three cameras on the corner of Winston Churchill Drive and Merrifield Road, Pinetown.

Dylan Jenkins, chairman of the PRNW, reported that the three cameras were strategically placed at the intersection, as the roads lead to Mariannhill, Clermont and Chesterville.

“The roads at the intersections act as an access point to the highway, which leads to these areas. Vehicles that were hijacked in Pinetown often end up in these areas. The cameras will enable us to confirm the direction that a hijacked vehicle is traveling in, as well as number plates. This can enable police to block off access points and ambush the criminals,” said Jenkins.

The cameras can be linked to a smart phone or laptop, and Martin van Acker, the owner of Eye Cam, has provided the PRHW with constant access to the camera’s live recordings.

“I can literally sit in my living room, log onto the cameras’ live recordings and provide the SAPS with vital information. It is an immensely valuable crime fighting tool,” said Jenkins.
