St Mary’s narrowly beaten

St Mary's DSG hockey team put up a commendable fight.

ST Mary’s DSG hosted an U16 hockey tournament on Saturday 5 April and Sunday 6 April.

On Saturday, St Mary’s competed against Maris Stella Girls’ High School, The Wykeham Collegiate and Durban Girls’ High School (DGHS).

They beat Maris Stella Girls’ High School 1-0 as well as The Wykcham Collegiate 1-0. In both matches Tyla Putz scored the winning goals.

St Mary’s also won against DGHS 4-0.

St John’s Diocesan School and St Mary’s DSG faced-off on Sunday for the finals.

At the final whistle the score was 1 all. An eight second match challenge was used to determine the winner.

Each team had to submit three players to take on the oppositions goal keeper and attempt to score a goal in 8 seconds. St John’s Diocesan School managed to win the challenge and was declared the winner.

Other awards pertaining to the tournament include: Nox Manele (DGHS) was announced as the best keeper of the tournament, Alexandra Mitchley (St Mary’s DSG) was declared the best defender, Tayla Putz (St Mary’s DSG) was named the best midfielder, and Hannah Shirley (St Mary’s DSG) was nominated as the best forward.

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School and Danville Park Girls’ High School also competed in the tournament.
