Pinetown protest: Mayor called in

Durban's mayor leaves council meeting to deal with protesting taxi drivers in Pinetown.

Mayor James Nxumalo reportedly left a council meeting to go to Lahee Park where he is addressing protestors from the taxi industry who have been on a stand-off with police since Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, violent incidents are still being reported. A report  published on a Facebook community watch group quoted a motorist who claims to have witnessed a group of people with ‘huge sticks’  emerging from a taxi and attacking vehicles.

The stand-off between officers and taxi operators turned violent yesterday with authorities using water canons and tear gas to disperse crowds.
