TWO men were arrested last night for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in the Mpumalanga area, Hammarsdale.
Mpumalanga police and the Pinetown Tactical Response Team were conducting their operations and they followed up on information about illegal guns in the area.
KZN police spokesman, Major Thuani Zwane said, police arrested a 27-year-old man who is a tavern owner, a 9mm pistol with 48 live rounds was seized.
“The recovered 9mm pistol was stolen during a robbery in Hammersdale in September this year,” he said.
The second man (28) was arrested at his house at Georgedale where a 9mm pistol was found.
“All recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the province,” added Zwane.
The owner of the tavern was recently arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and is out on bail.
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members on their recoveries.
“We will continue these operations throughout the festive season,” she said.
The two men will appear in the Mpumalanga Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 November.
