Bloms celebrate six decades of marriage

Speaking about marriage today in contrast to back in their day, Daniel said people give up too easily nowadays.

DANIEL and Elizabeth Blom from Mount Vernon celebrated their diamond jubilee wedding anniversary on Thursday, 24 December 2015.

The couple met in Paarl in the Western Cape years ago when they lived in the same boarding place. They were married in 1955 and have two daughters and two sons, one of whom has died.

Speaking about marriage today in contrast to back in their day, Daniel said people give up too easily nowadays. “Young stars get married today and get divorced six months later. There is no secret to our marriage. You must work hard and a have a good living. This is what has kept us together for so long,” he said.

The Bloms say they now find it hard to celebrate their anniversary as they lost their son and daughter-in-law on the same day four years ago. “We were busy celebrating my parent’s anniversary and a birthday at my other brother’s house when we got the call,” said Daniel and Elizabeth’s daughter, Elria Rossouw.

She said that the day now brings painful memories and as a result, the family finds it hard to celebrate.
