Kearsney enjoys basketball and squash win

Kearsney College played Hilton at the weekend, winning basketball and squash, but lost in cricket and water polo.

KEARSNEY College in Botha’s Hill enjoyed an eventful sports weekend against Hilton College last week.

In cricket news, following a good bowling and fielding performance, Kearsney managed to contain Hilton to a score of 213 after Hilton batted for 59 overs. That left Kearsney to get the total in 51 overs, but unfortunately the top order collapsed and Kearsney was bowled out for 70 runs.

The first team water polo fixture was extremely competitive up until the last minute when the score was 6-6. With 43 seconds to go, Hilton scored a break-away goal and then directly after that scored another goal to ensure they took the first fixture of the 2016 season. The Kearsney players played extremely well and were disappointed with their result, but unfortunately they had not capitalised on opportunities. Kearsney lost to Hilton 6-8.

Kearsney traveled to Hilton to play their opening season fixture in basketball. Throughout the match, the Kearsney players struggled with the physicality of the Hilton players, who were bigger and much more aggressive. However, the Kearsney boys were much more skilled than their opponents and they were able to draw on this skill to weather the brutal onslaught by sticking to their game plan. Kearsney’s first team beat Hilton 51-37. Thomas Westermeyer, Khule Bophela and captain Mvelo Buthelezi all scored double figures.

Kearsney’s first squash team beat Hilton 5-3.

In canoeing news, a number of Kearsney paddlers travelled to Underberg for the 2016 Drak Challenge, where their technical skills were tested due to the low level of the river. Timothy Marsh was Kearsney’s first paddler home, finishing in an impressive 48th position overall and fifth in the U18 category. This was a fantastic achievement as he finished ahead of the some of the big names in the junior section. Rory McNeill was nine minutes back in 68th position overall, also obtaining a top 10 position in the U18 category. Rory and Timothy will be teaming up for the 2016 Dusi Canoe Marathon.
