New Germany protesters block roads
The residents said they were tired of empty promises after living in the dark for almost a week.
TRAFFIC was severely affected as angry New Germany residents blocked roads and burnt tyres in Dinkelman Road last Friday morning.
The residents said they were tired of empty promises after living in the dark for almost a week.
“We have had no electricity since Monday and we have thrown out all the food in the fridge because it has rotted.”
Ward 21 community said they reported the matter numerous times to the electricity department with no success. “Most of us are not working, but we had to throw away the little food that we have,” said the residents.
Some of them were concerned that they have sent out CVs but now their phones were not charged and they could have missed out on job opportunities.
Residents said the criminals have also taken advantage of the matter as cables were cut and stolen in some of the houses.
Ward 21 secretary, Mfana Qwabe, said the residents were complaining about the electricity that went out on Monday, 25 January.
“The problem is that the electricians want assurance that they will be safe if they come out to fix problem as there is another contractor that is fighting with the municipality to get the tender,” he said.
The electricity was fixed and restored later on the day.
