‘Cantastic’ food donation feeds thousands
The Do More Foundation helped raise more than 8 000 tins of food for World Food Day this year.
OVER and above the one million meals that it has donated since January this year, the Do More Foundation went even further this World Food Day.
World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honour of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in 1945. The campaign encourages millions of people around the world to work to eradicate hunger. Since 1981, World Food Day has adopted a different theme each year in order to highlight areas needed for action and provide a common focus. For 2017, the theme was “Change the future of migration. Invest in food security and rural development”.
The Foundation invited various organisations, partners and suppliers to participate in its campaign to collect cans of food in an effort to ease hunger under the slogan, Together WeCan #DoMore.
Founded by RCL Foods, the Foundation’s campaign urged employees from the participating companies to donate two cans of food, which was then given to FoodForward SA, previously known a FoodBank. A total of 8 359 cans were donated, which equates to 16 718 meals.
The Do More Foundation ran the campaign across more than 28 of RCL Foods sites around the country. I
The company also called on its national office neighbours at Westway Office Park in Westville to get on board. More than 6 000 people work in the office park.
Partners and suppliers of RCL Foods were also invited to take part.
“This is an incredible example of the Do More Foundation acting as a catalyst and collaborating with organisations to #DoMore,” said the foundation executive, Warren Farrer.
“The Foundation was set up specifically because we realised that the only way to do more to alleviate hunger is through collaboration.”
To date, various organisations have signed up, including: Barrows, Bluejuice, City Printing Works, Eatfresh, Europcar, Eversheds-Sutherland Attorneys, Full Circle Communications, Globe Flight, Snazzi events, Tegwen Agencies and The Coffee Company.
“We’re excited to extend our WeCAN#DoMore campaign beyond RCL Foods. We always knew that we could grow the foundation beyond the company and this is just a start. We are essentially extending what has always been an internal employee programme to other organisations,” added Warren.
