Westville Horticultural Society celebrates its diamond jubilee

SIXTY years ago, a group of keen gardeners met in Westville to form the Westville Horticultural Society.

Andrew Pender-Smith, Westville Horticultural Society secretary, said this year the society celebrates six decades of sharing gardening tips, talks and outings on numerous subjects of interest to gardeners.

“Whether it’s been talks or demonstrations on how best to look after roses or grow orchids, to visiting nature reserves and flower farms, the society has done and seen a great deal,” said Pender-Smith.

In recent years, special emphasis has been placed on indigenous gardening and environmental awareness. Talks such as ‘How to attract birds and butterflies to your garden’ and being a ‘water wise gardener’ have been of special interest.

The public is encouraged to join any of the talks and outings.
