Pinetown workers clean up stinky river

The concerned workers left their normal job to clean up the Umbilo River which flows through the industrial part of Pinetown.

PLASTICS and bottles were just some of the litter found in the Umbilo river, which flows through the industrial part of Pinetown.

Workers from three companies, next to where the river flows, took it upon themselves to clean up this river as the plea to sort out this issue has fallen on deaf ears for years.

“The river has changed into all kinds of colours and no one seems to take responsibility for it. The rainy season is coming and we are going to have a problem. When it hot the river stinks and it has been reported on numerous occasions,” said a businesswoman, Bianca Kaidatzis.

“We can not even look down from our offices as the sight of the river is usually not a nice one. It’s filthy and the wildlife is dying due to this dirt and chemicals that are poured onto the river. I wish people could look after the environment and stop dumping all sort of things into the rivers,” she said.
