Smith said during school holidays, learners love to socialise.
To be safe, Smith said learners should not publicise their destination on social media.
“If a friend is having a party, parents must arrange to take and pick up their children at the designated place. Children should give their parents the host’s phone numbers,” said Smith.
She urged children to take soft drinks and no alcohol.
“They must also not keep quiet and allow unsafe behaviour. If something does not feel right, that means it is not. Phone your parents immediately to be fetched,” she said.
“Remember that you don’t have to use alcohol or other drugs to have fun.”
Smith also advised youngsters to maintain an honest relationship with their parents and for parents to have an open door policy with their children.
Smith added that all learners and parents must ensure that the Disaster Management Act is still adhered to with regards to wearing masks, sanitising, washing hands regularly and maintaining social distancing as much as possible.
