2024 Comrades Marathon direction confirmed

The last Comrades Up Run took place in 2019.

NEXT year’s Comrades Marathon will be an Up Run.

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) Board has confirmed that the 97th edition of the world’s biggest, oldest and most famous ultramarathon will start in the coastal city of Durban and finish in the inland city of Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, June 9.

CMA chairperson Mqondisi Ngcobo confirmed the good news after a board meeting last week.

“Runners have been awaiting confirmation of the direction of next year’s race, and we are pleased to announce that the 2024 Comrades Marathon will finish in the City of Choice, Pietermaritzburg.”

The last Comrades Up Run took place in 2019 prior to two consecutive editions of the epic road-running event being cancelled due to Covid-19. Since then, both the 2022 and 2023 editions were Down Runs so this year can be an Up Run, enabling the continuation of the race’s tradition of hosting a Down Run in odd years and an Up Run in even years.

CMA race director Rowyn James said they are currently looking at suitable finish venues which will be confirmed at a later date.

The Comrades Marathon will start in Durban at 05:30 and end 12 hours later in Pietermaritzburg.
