THE eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that the damaged manholes on Hagart Road in Pinetown “have been repaired and reinforced”, with “preventative measures” put in place “to reduce the risk of future damage caused by heavy-duty vehicles”.

The municipality’s marketing and communications director Mandla Nsele said the road with be monitored continuously, with “any additional maintenance requirements” resolved swiftly “to ensure public safety” and to “preserve the integrity of the City’s infrastructure”.

“To strengthen preventative maintenance efforts, the road has been identified as a priority monitoring hotspot. As part of this initiative, the Road Infrastructure Management Directorate will regularly monitor:

• Stormwater infrastructure for damage and blockages.
• Road markings and signage for fading, damage, or deterioration.
• Sidewalks for damage caused by turning heavy-duty vehicles.

 “Furthermore, the responsible Roads Inspector will conduct scheduled quarterly inspections of the route to assess infrastructure conditions, identify emerging issues, and facilitate timely repairs where required. This proactive approach will help ensure the long-term safety, functionality, and resilience of the road network,” said Nsele.

Another issue which road users raised regarded streetlights on the road.

The damaged infrastructure had affected foot and vehicle traffic.
