SOME residents living in Ashley, Pinetown, have raised concerns about the supply of water in the area, saying since early July it has been intermittent, at inconvenient hours and at a low pressure when flowing through the taps.

Some residents on Alloe and Duyts roads and Retief Street said whenever water is available, it is for four to five hours between midnight and the earlier hours of the morning, which is an inconvenience.

They added that attempts to seek answers and have the matter resolved by the eThekwini Municipality and the area’s councillors have come up dry.

According to these residents, water supply in this area was a problem in the first three months of the year, and the issue resurfaced recently.

In a statement, the municipality said these residents were affected by maintenance work on the Durban Heights Water Treatment, which was recently completed by its bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW).

“UUW has confirmed that the plant has returned to full production following the completion of all scheduled maintenance activities. The municipality’s Water and Sanitation Directorate (EWS) has therefore reopened reservoir outlets and is actively restoring the municipal water distribution network.

 “As the restoration process involves multiple reservoirs across the supply system, water will be restored in phases. Some communities will begin receiving water from the morning of 25 July. Other areas are expected to have supply restored by midday or later in the afternoon, as reservoirs refill and the distribution system stabilises.

“Consumers are reminded that restoration times may vary depending on location, elevation, and reservoir levels,” reads the statement.
