A GILLITTS family has said that they were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs after a fire destroyed their family home, including three cars, last Friday (September 4).  

Viren Jugroop said he and his wife, his three sons, including their granny and another family member, were inside their home when the fire broke out at around 23:30.

Jugroop said a candle fell, setting a curtain on fire, resulting in the devastation that followed.

He said the family had resorted to using candles due to a two-day long power outage in the area.

Jugroop expressed his gratitude to God that no one was injured in the fire, as the family managed to escape.

“The flames were big and we tried putting them out by pouring water on them but the more water we poured the flames got bigger,” said Jugroop.

He said another distressing issue is that he used one of the vehicles lost in the fire to run his business.

“We lost everything. We lost all our documents, IDs, marriage certificates. I even lost my tools for my business,” said Jugroop.

A close family friend has extended a helping hand to the family by providing them shelter, said Jugroop, while others continue to show welcomed support by dropping off clothes and groceries.

The family is now asking for further assistance from any kind Samaritan for help of any nature.

Pastor Rio Moosa from the Ignite Church in Gillitts, where Jugroop and his family are members, said: “We thank God that our precious family are all safe and well after this devastating fire.

“A special and heartfelt thank you to the firefighters, first responders and everyone who was on scene, who worked tirelessly through the night to bring the fire under control and protect lives. We are deeply grateful for your courage and dedication.

“I also want to thank every kind soul who has already come forward to assist this precious family.

“I appeal to individuals, businesses and our community, whatever you are able to give can make a difference. It could be a single building block, a pocket of cement, building materials, household items, or a cash contribution.

“Every contribution, big or small, brings this family one step closer to rebuilding.

“Together, we can bring hope back to life, rebuild what was lost and restore their home. Together, let us rebuild. Together, let us restore. Together, let us bring hope to life. May God richly bless every person who reaches out with a helping hand.”
