Popularly known for their fresh produce, crafts, ready-made foods, decor items, furniture, pet products, and more, the Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market has not only made its mark for Durbanites but has also become a destination for tourists from across the country.

The market was founded by the Standeaven family in 1998, whose aim was to help local farmers move surplus stock. The market started with only 12 stalls on an open field at the Shongweni Polo Club.

Marketing administrator Vanessa Fraden said, “We are not only a craft, food and deli market but have become a lifestyle market where people come to connect with friends from early in the morning and get to chill and listen to free music on two stages while enjoying the incredible view. We are also wheelchair-friendly.

“The market is a space for the whole family, including pets, to enjoy and spend time together. Kids can run free and also take part in some of the activities, such as The Shongweni Express Train rides, pony rides, merry-go-rounds and jungle gyms. If you would like to take a walk on the wild side, we have a short nature trail. Adults are welcome to join us in The Standing Room in the main hall where we serve our very own craft beer and gin.”

Fraden said the market operates on certain days of the week, and they will be open for the upcoming Easter holidays.

“We are open every Saturday from 07:00 to 13:00 and also on the last Sunday of every month from 08:00 to 13:00, come rain or shine. Our Easter markets this year are on Saturday, April 8, from 07:00 to 13:00 and Sunday, April 9, from 08:00 to 13:00. We have a free Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, April 9, at 09:00 near the main stage,” said Fraden.
