Young soccer star shines

Hayden Van der Merwe will be part of the Dragons HPT Elite team jetting off to Barcelona, Spain, later this year.

WESTVILLE Old Boys’ Football Club’s Hayden Van der Merwe has been selected to be a part of the Dragons HPT Elite team jetting off to Barcelona, Spain, later this year.

The nine-year-old loved soccer from an early age when he joined Little Strikers at pre-primary school.

“He loved any sport that involved a ball. Unlike most children, he was not interested in toys at all and would much rather spend his time playing with a ball in the garden. He is a keen Liverpool supporter, but his favourite player is Messi,” said his mother, Kerry.

The coach, Mthunzi Zwane said Hayden’s selection comes after a rigorous assessment period in late June and early July.

“Hayden has been with the club since 2022. His outstanding performance post the camp and dedication have earned him this incredible opportunity. We are all proud of Hayden and wish him the best in Spain.”

Westville Old Boys’ Football Club was voted as the Best Sport Club/Coaching in Durban in the Best of Durban Readers’ Choice Awards 2024.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
