Suspected hijackers killed in shoot-out with police in Mariannhill
The three men were suspected of hijacking a vehicle with home appliances on Tuesday.
THREE suspects were killed last night (November 20) in Mariannhill when a shoot-out ensued between them and the police.
It is alleged that the suspects were sought after hijacking a vehicle loaded with home appliances on Tuesday (November 19).
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said that on Tuesday afternoon, a man was hijacked of his Hyundai H1 delivery vehicle loaded with home appliances worth an undisclosed amount of money on Intake Road in Mariannhill.
“The police’s intelligence traced the hijacked vehicle to Klaarwater Hostel in Mariannhill, and information indicated that the suspects were loading the hijacked goods into a bakkie,” reported the police spokesman.
According to Netshiunda, when police approached the area, they spotted the identified bakkie and signalled for the driver to stop, however, the driver ignored the police’s instructions and sped off, and the police gave chase.
“During the high-speed vehicle chase, the suspects started firing shots at the police, and a shoot-out ensued. The suspect’s vehicle came to a standstill at the corner of Henry Pennington Road and Ndwandwe Street in Klaarwater, Mariannhill. Three suspects were found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the shoot-out and were found in possession of two firearms whose serial numbers were filed off, as well as several rounds of ammunition.”
Apart from the police vehicle having bullet holes on the bonnet, Netshiunda said no police officer was injured during the shoot-out.
