BMX coach mentors younger generation

Christopher Axford hopes to create a welcoming environment where riders of all skill levels can grow in confidence and ability.

EVERY year the Queensburgh BMX Club holds a number of skills training clinics to spread passion for the sport and give youngsters a chance to cycle on a pump track.

One of those involved in spreading the positivity and introducing people to new experiences is coach Christopher Axford.

Axford, a regular at the track on Marlton Road in Northdene, helps create a welcoming environment where riders of all skill levels can grow in confidence and ability.

He recently chatted to Queensburgh News about when he fell in love with the sport and why the clinics are important to him.

“The purpose for the clinics are to give new riders and parents an understanding into BMX racing and understand the importance of proper training and structure to be able to achieve your goals. As a Queensburgh club coach, my role is to grow the skills of our riders and give them the tools to succeed. It’s incredibly rewarding to give back to the sport, it keeps me pushing to give my riders the best,” he said.

Axford added that some clinics are free, and encouraged residents to check the club’s social media pages.

Fostering a love for the sport is one thing but Axford also believes that the support the club offers is invaluable.

“Our club is also incredibly important; firstly we are one of the oldest clubs in South Africa with rich history, and some great racers and world champions have come from Queesnburgh. For an introduction into BMX the club is a great starting place where you fall in love with the sport, get to know the community, create friends around the track and have the help from the club on the next step to get into the racing.

“The Queensburgh BMX Club in my personal opinion is more than a club, it’s a family that always wants its members to do the best they can and follow their dreams, and it’s always great to have that support,” he said.
