THE community of Berkshire Downs in New Germany is reeling after a ferocious dog attack last Friday (May 8) where a 31-year-old local man succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

It is alleged that the dog attack, which reportedly left the victim with severe wounds, happened on the corner of Datchett and Hillside roads in New Germany at about 04:00, while the man was a few hundred metres away from his home.

The Metro Police and SAPS have not confirmed the number of dogs involved in the attack or who their owners are.

The chairperson of the sub-forum of the area’s community policing forum, Lyn Robson, said the “very, very sad news” of the deadly attack has raised concerns  over the negligence of dog owners in the area.

“It is tragic, I am very angry. We have a lot of dogs running on the streets, many of them are on heat. It is reckless and totally uncalled for. We are absolutely saddened by this,” said Robson, who urged dog owners in the area to take responsibility for their pets.
