All talk and no action

Letter to the Editor - week ending 7 October

EDITOR – The changes made to the leadership in eThekwini have come to nothing. Our new Mayor, Zandile Gumede, said she would put service delivery first and help the people.

Well it’s all talk. On Wednesday, 28 September, a colleague and I proposed a notice of motion to the full council. The motion stated that while the precipitation of rain water was a fairly fixed amount throughout the centuries, the population of eThekwini had grown substantially.

To this end, we proposed that the municipality ‘investigate the inclusion of an element of Rainwater Harvesting in the requirements when new building plans are submitted’.

Virtually all the opposition parties supported our motion, but the ANC said no. End of debate.

All those huge new factories and warehouses can carry on discharging their rainfall into the storm water drains, and then into the sea.

And guess what? Our municipal leadership will spend a fortune taking the salt out of the sea, to provide drinking water. Does that help the people?
