Hannah strikes gold

St Mary’s pupil takes gold at Judo Championships.

HANNAH Breytenbach, a Grade 4 pupil from St Mary’s DSG, recently won gold in her age group category at the SA School’s Judo Championships.

Breytenbach has been practicing Judo since she was six years old, and decided that she wanted to try Judo after watching her older brother.

“It is hard work. I practice a lot, but I enjoy it a lot. I hope to make it to the Olympics,” said Breytenbach.

The tiny athlete reported that she currently holds a half-orange belt in Judo, which means that she is three belts away from the coveted black belt.

According to Breytenbach, the belts are awarded based on the athletes’ aptitude in certain Judo techniques.

“My favourite technique is the Seoi-nage. You have to throw your opponent over your shoulder,” she said.
