Hillcrest Villagers kick off to a good start
The Land Rover Durban Hillcrest Villagers' Rugby club's top two teams recently raked in wins during their first games of the season.
THE 2017 Provincial First Division Rugby champions, Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club, started this KZNRU Season on a high.
The team hosted the relegated Premier Division outfit, Jaguars RFC, at home at the Durban Shongweni Club.
In the 2nd XV match, it was pretty much one-way-traffic.
From the onset, the Villagers set off from the starting blocks, with one mission in mind – to stamp total authority. A try feast ensued and the Villagers took a win of 57-0. Man of the Match titles were given to Mark Hodgkiss (forwards) and Jaque Sweetland (backs).
Under the helm of head coach, Mike de Kock, the Villagers’ 1st XV continued their dominance of the last two season in their first game of the season. After a scrappy first 20 minutes in a deluge of rain, the side shifted gear and turned on their own taps.
By half time, the Villagers’ side came to terms with the adverse weather conditions and with some powerful scrummaging and an agile back line, gaps began to open up.
The scoreboard, after 80min, totalled 45-10 in favour of the home side.
Man of the match titles went to Paddy McLaughlin (forwards) and Henkie Groenewald (backline).
At the after match proceedings, Randle Wagner, the Jaguars’ chairman, praised the Villagers’ in their decisive win.
In return, the Villagers’ chairman, René Missen thanked the opposition and wished them well for the remainder of the season.
The Villagers’ will take on the Empangeni Rhinos, on Saturday, 24 March from 2pm at the Durban Shongweni Club.
