Response officer arrests suspect in South Crest after shootout

When approached, the suspects started firing at the officers, hitting one of the vehicles several times.

Response officers from Special Operations Group (SOG) arrested a suspect in Primrose Street in South Crest on August 9 at about 7.45 pm.

“We received a call from a client about a suspicious silver Volkswagen Polo and after a response vehicle was sent out the officer requested backup,” said Du Toit Lambrechts, CEO of SOG.

Another two response vehicles responded to the location. When approached, the suspects started firing at the officers, hitting one of the vehicles several times.

The confiscated firearm.

“Officers returned fire, causing the five suspects to abandon their vehicle and flee the scene on foot, but we managed to catch one.”

Lambrechts said that no one was injured during the shootout.

According to him, the suspects were busy with a house robbery in the same street when they were interrupted. Officers confiscated the suspect’s stolen vehicle as per Langlaagte SAPS case and a firearm.

“Thank you to everyone who assisted on the scene and the follow-ups after the incident, including coffee brought to us. Remember that awareness is key to your safety,” Lambrechts concluded.

The suspect was handed over to Alberton SAPS who transferred the case to Trio Crimes Germiston.
