Adopt water saving measures daily – CoE

On March 23 the city celebrated World Water Day and it observed National Water Week from March 20 to 26.

The City of Ekurhuleni is faced with the challenge of high-water losses, particularly in areas that are deemed to be indigent.

In this regard, the city has launched a campaign called Be the Change to coincide with World Water Day and National Water Week.

At the centre of the city’s campaign is educating people about preserving water to ensure that there is enough and protected water for future development needs.

On March 23 the city celebrated World Water Day and it observed National Water Week from March 20 to 26.

The Be the Change campaign is specifically targeting learners and residents who reside in areas with high water consumption, and areas that are deemed indigent.

Communities and business owners are encouraged to get involved in the campaign by adopting water-saving measures in their daily lives by being mindful of when they use, consume and manage water.

Here are some of the water-saving measures that residents should practice:

• Reduce the amount of time in the shower.

• Avoid washing cars with hosepipes, rather use buckets.

• Avoid washing pavements with hosepipes, rather use a broom to sweep.

• Turn off taps while brushing teeth.

• Do not hesitate to repair leaking taps.

• Avoid turning taps open fully and turn them off after use.

• Avoid leaving taps running while rinsing hair or shaving.

• Cover swimming pools to prevent quick water evaporation.

• Install low flow restrictions on taps at home.

“We have every reason to believe that together we can be the change that we want to see when it comes to water preservation,” said spokesperson for the CoE, Zweli Dlamini.
