Thembisa artist dreams to work with automotive industries in SA

"Who knows maybe I could end up overseas and I can bring the skill back home."

Aspiring artist Nhlanhla Prince Malinga (46), from Phomolong, Thembisa, dreams of collaborating with automotive industries in South Africa.

“I have never heard of a car designer as a profession in South Africa. I thought if I could become one, that it would open doors for many other young people.

“This profession is very scarce. Africa does not have a car that is 100% its own. I would like to be the first person to have a car that is completely African and South Africa,” said Malinga.

Malinga is passionate about drawing and he can’t imagine life without it.

Malinga is passionate about drawing, and he cannot imagine life without it.

He started drawing at the age of five and when he was in primary school.

“It is hard to be recognised without qualifications and no institution in this country offers car design as a course. It is also difficult to enter the existing industries.”

“I plan to make my designs known as much as possible. Using magazines, newspapers and social media,” added Malinga.

“Who knows, maybe I could end up overseas and can bring the skill back home.”

Malinga is passionate about drawing and he can’t imagine life without it.

He survives by selling ice lollies at a local school. On weekends, he is a DJ with a passion for soul and R&B and he plays at pubs around Thembisa.

“Before this, I was a machine operator for a company in Isando.”
