Ekurhuleni hosts international bowls tournament

Ekurhuleni Bowls is the host of this year’s International Disability Bowls tournament.

The international event started on May 18 and runs until May 31.

The games will be played at the Delville, Kempton Park, and the Benoni bowling clubs.

Judy Plater is the assistant team manager for Team England.

Marianne Hunt, the vice president of Kempton Park Bowling Club, spoke to the Kempton Express.

“We have 10 countries competing. We have physically disabled participants and also visually impaired participants who compete at this international level event,” she said.

Hunt added that this is the first international tournament the Kempton Park Bowling Club has hosted.

Versha Rowjee, a physically disabled competitor for Team SA, said this was her first international event.

“I am excited. I have played the sport for five years and enjoy it very much.”

She wished a warm welcome to all her international competitors.

“I hope everyone enjoys our country’s lovely weather and hospitality,” said Rowjee.

Judy Plater, the assistant team manager for the England team, spoke to the Kempton Express about families hiding their disabled relatives and not letting them participate in any sports.

“I think they are doing their disabled loved ones a great disservice.

“Many disabled people can benefit from playing a sport like bowling. It is very social and good for people who might be lonely and those with mental issues,” she said.

She added that they get gentle exercise, connect with others and have friendly banter and a bit of competition.
