Police recover hijacked truck by bogus cops on R24

The officers arrested a 40-year-old suspect and recovered a sixteen aerial signal jammer from the truck.

Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) members arrested three suspects and recovered three motor vehicles and one truck between June 7 and June 9.

On June 7 at around 07:40, Sergeant Jaco Powell and Constable Jean-Mare Eksteen were on the R554 en route to Palmridge High Court when an investigator tracking a hijacked truck flagged them down.

It was discovered the truck was hijacked allegedly by suspects wearing police uniforms at R24 and Barbara Road.

He informed them about a white Volvo truck and trailer on R554 that was possibly hijacked.

The officers raced ahead and stopped the truck opposite Roodekop with one suspect inside.

On further investigation, they discovered the truck was indeed hijacked, allegedly by suspects wearing police uniforms at the R24 and Barbara Road.

The officers arrested a 40-year-old suspect and recovered a sixteen aerial signal jammer from the truck.

Inside the trailer, the officers found a load of JVC televisions worth over R1.9m.

Investigations continue as the Johannesburg Flying Squad arrested suspects in two vehicles on the N3 highway shortly after and possibly linked to this incident.

On June 8 at around 15:30, BFS officers received a complaint of shoplifting at Pick n Pay at Lakeside Mall, Benoni.

On arrival, they arrested two suspects, aged 22 and 34 years who allegedly attempted to steal clothing, meat and other items.

It was discovered the truck was hijacked, allegedly by suspects wearing police uniforms at R24 and Barbara Road.

In further policing, the BFS recovered three abandoned vehicles – an orange Toyota Yaris found on Nhlapo Street, Katlehong reported stolen on a Brackenhurst case; a silver Kia Cerato at Ehlanzeni Hostel, Thembisa reported hijacked on a Thembisa case where the owner was allegedly shot; and a white Toyota Fortuner found at Welgedacht Road, Springs that was taken in a business robbery on a Springs case.

Investigations continue into all cases.

The suspects will be appearing in the local Magistrate’s courts facing several charges.
